Guide

Mercenary – Hybrid Sword & Shield Build Guide

This build focuses on aggressive Sword & Shield combat, strong chase potential and defensive pressure.

The goal is to stay aggressive while using your shield to block dangerous attacks, build Sword Tip stacks and punish every opportunity your opponent gives you.

Skills

Sword & Shield

  • Shield Dash
  • Shield Slam

How the Build Works

Most of the time, you want to fight with Sword & Shield.

Build Sword Tip stacks with your normal attacks. Thanks to our Weapon Mastery talents, we only need 4 stacks instead of 6 to activate Blade Edge.

Once you reach 4 stacks, use Left Click + Right Click together to consume Blade Edge and deal heavy burst damage.

Shield Dash is extremely important for maintaining pressure. Use it to interrupt attacks or healing and to quickly close longer distances.

For maximum chase distance:

Shift Dash → Shield Dash

Try to connect the shield hit at the end whenever possible.

Shield Slam is our main engage and repositioning tool. Use it to start fights, avoid dangerous attacks or quickly cover medium distances. Ideally, land directly on the enemy for the additional damage.

Chasing & Interrupting

If an enemy creates distance and starts healing, don't give them the reset.

A strong chase sequence is:

Shift Dash → Charged Impalement → Shield Dash

If they dash again during your Impalement, immediately follow with Shield Dash to close the remaining distance and interrupt the heal.

Another strong catch-up option is:

Shift Dash → Shield Slam

In short:

Block → Build 4 Sword Tip stacks → Burst with Blade Edge → Chase → Interrupt heals → Keep the pressure.

Affixes

Valor — Lv.4

  • Increases Attack for more consistent damage.

Strife — Lv.4

  • Increases your Melee Weapon Damage and supports the build's close-range playstyle.

Wrath — Lv.4

  • Significantly increases your damage while below 50% Health.

Stoic — Lv.5

  • Provides additional Physical and Magic Resistance below 50% Health and restores Health when dropping below 30%.

Tenacious — Lv.1

  • Provides additional Maximum Health for extra survivability.

The Affix setup creates a strong balance between damage and survivability, becoming especially powerful when your Health drops below 50%.

Consumables

Always bring enough Healing Potions.

I personally recommend carrying at least 9, but 12 whenever possible gives you much more room in longer fights.

Play aggressively, use your shield intelligently and never give your opponent a free reset.
